To explain what static electricity is, we have to start from the fact that everything is made up of atoms. These have a nucleus in which there are positive particles (protons) surrounded by other negative particles (electrons). If the number of protons and electrons is the same, the charge is neutral. But if one atom rubs against another, one can give electrons to the other and become negatively charged. This accumulation of charges on the surface of an object is static electricity, which will occur especially in insulating materials through which electricity circulates poorly.

The cramp is generated when a person who has been charged with negative charges comes into contact with another person or with something that does not have those electrons or negative charges or has fewer. At that moment there is a transfer of electrons from one to another to balance the charges. That is what causes the spark, although it is not always noticeable. For us to notice it, it must have sufficient power to exceed the perception threshold; usually noticeable from 1 milliamp. In any case, you can be calm because although it is annoying, it is not dangerous for your health.

HOW CAN I AVOID STATIC ELECTRICITY?

  • Avoid environmental dryness . One of the main elements that favor static electricity is the dryness of the environment. If the humidity is less than 30% or 40%, the static electricity starts to increase. Hence, in that case it is useful to use a humidifier, especially when you have the heating or air conditioning on for a long time. Another option is to use plants since they increase the degree of humidity in the environment.
  • Choose the materials of your clothes well . On the one hand, try to avoid clothes made with synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon) since they favor static electricity to accumulate in the body. For the same reason, if possible, do not wear rubber-soled shoes. Instead, opt for natural fabrics like cotton or linen that absorb electricity better.
