Why does your tongue itch when eating pineapple?

Table of contents:

Anonim

Although pineapple is one of the 15 foods to live longer and better, some people find their tongue itches when they eat it, or it does not feel good at all. This itch is mainly due to the action of bromelain and oxalic acid, two of the components found in pineapple.

How do these components work?

Bromelain is an enzyme that favors the digestion of proteins, whose effect also extends to the cells on the surface of the tongue, causing itching. Oxalic acid, for its part, causes damage to the nerve endings of the tongue, which also causes itching. It is an effect that does not last long and is not dangerous.

What if it was an allergy?

If the itching persists over time and other reactions appear such as rashes or hives, lacrimation, nasal irritation, etc., go to the doctor to assess whether it is an allergy.

If it gives you heartburn …

In that case, in principle, it is better to avoid the consumption of pineapple. But if you want to enjoy it occasionally, you can reduce the risk of discomfort by choosing pieces that are well ripe (the base is always sweeter) and mixing it with other less acidic fruits, such as banana, or preparing skewers with pineapple and mozzarella .

To reduce inconvenience

  • Avoid the stem. In addition to fiber, the heart of pineapple concentrates a large amount of bromelain, so if you tend to sting your tongue, avoid it.
  • Better mature. The more mature, the less oxalic acid it has and the less itchy. If you pull the leaves and they come out easily, it is ripe.

And did you know that …

  • Canned pineapple. Canned pineapple undergoes a heat treatment that reduces its bromelain content, so it stings less than fresh pineapple. But also its contribution of vitamins and minerals is lower; although it is not a problem if you consume fruits and vegetables daily. Better choose it in its juice and not in syrup.
  • Rich in antioxidants. Thanks to its high content of vitamin C, it helps strengthen the immune system and counteracts the effects of aging.
  • Beneficial in large meals. Either in dessert or in some other dish, add pineapple. Bromelain can help make digestion less heavy.
  • Lots of fiber. It is one of the great advantages of pineapple. Thanks to it, it helps you fight constipation and, in addition, it is very satiating.
  • Renal problems. If you have a tendency to form calcium oxalate kidney stones, you should limit the consumption of certain foods, including pineapple, although their oxalic acid content is moderate.
