If sports tourism is your thing, we have found the perfect destination

For many, taking a (well-deserved) vacation means giving up any kind of physical activity and doing as little as possible. It is lawful of course, and we all want to have moments of disconnection and relaxation but surely if you are reading this it is because that does not suit you, or at least, not entirely. If you find it difficult to sit still for more than half an hour and you cannot conceive of a weekend getaway without practicing some sport, you are in luck because we have found the perfect city in Catalonia: Girona.

In addition to being able to hallucinate with all its artistic, historical and gastronomic heritage , Girona has become a perfect destination for those who seek to practice sports outdoors during their holidays. The sports infrastructures of the city, the tourist services and the charm that the area has –in addition to the wide and varied offer of activities and accommodation– are the perfect claim for sports tourism. What could be better than combining the relaxation of the holidays with some sport, gastronomy and history? We are already packing our bags here …

We do not say all this but rather the Sports Tourism brand of the Catalan Tourist Board that recognizes Girona –and all the cities that obtain this badge– as a destination adapted to the needs of athletes and that offers quality services and resources for those tourists who want to do sports during their visit. Although there are several, Girona in particular is certified in the disciplines of swimming, tennis, running, cycling or athletics.

Speaking of exercising and athletes … A few days ago our blogger Patry Jordán gathered more than 20 women in a beautiful park in Girona and gave them a fun fitness class, outdoors! We were there and the truth is that, despite the cold, the session was super entertaining and yes, we warmed up very quickly. Do not miss the multitude of groups of athletes that you can find online and that remain in Girona for excursions, via ferratas, diving, hiking, skating, paddle tennis …

Ah! And if all this were not enough, what we mentioned before, Girona has a huge artistic heritage so do not miss the opportunity to visit, among others, the Girona Cathedral, the old town of the city, the houses of Oñar - some beautiful houses hanging over the river Oñar–, "El Call" –which is the Jewish quarter of Girona–, the Arab baths or the Stone bridges, the Iron bridge and the Gómez bridge, it is all super instagrammable!

Have you also wanted to spend a weekend in Girona a lot? Well, you know that during 2020 the year of sports tourism will be celebrated in Catalonia, so it is a good opportunity to discover it. Start packing your suitcase now!
