Hate on the internet: how to fight it

Table of contents:

Anonim

We have said it several times: we are up to the hat of hatred that runs through social networks. One hate that takes the forms of machismo, racism, bullying or any kind of criticism - almost always anonymous - on the Internet. Haters are not funny, they are a scourge. By the nature of our environment, we have emphasized the way in which women are treated. We recently told you about the “enough already” of the influencer Lovely Pepa or the cases of merciless and senseless criticism to which many celebrities are subjected, a phenomenon known as Woman Shaming, which sometimes takes forms as absurd as criticism of women. belly of famous pregnant women.

That is why we are very happy to learn about initiatives such as “We are more” that Google has launched this year, with the collaboration of the Government of Spain, the FESP-UGT and the NGO Jóvenes y Desarrollo. This campaign aims to sensitize young people and society in general about violent radicalism and hate speech and promote positive messages of tolerance and social inclusion. The project, which is working on the training of more than 28,000 children and adolescents through workshops in schools and centers throughout the country, has had the support of several of the best-known YouTube creators of the moment, who, unfortunately, they are often the victims of hate attacks in any form.

We spoke to MissBlackGlamour, Mad4Yu, Rayden, and Ramia's Channel to find out how to disable haters and what to do if we are victims of this hatred.

What do we do if we suffer hatred on social media?

MissBlackGlamour and Mad4Yu are clear about it: ignore them, it is best to ignore them. Rayden adds that you have to report: it is super important to "tell a teacher." It is essential to be aware that victims of hate are not at fault or have done anything wrong to feel ashamed or displaced.

What can we say to the one who is spreading that hatred?

"Life is too short to waste it in hating and be sure all the damage you do will come back to you in one way or another." MissBlackGlamour

“Open your mind, read more, travel more, talk less and listen more. Realize that the world is wonderful because each of us is different, but at the same time, we are all the same. " Mad4Yu

“What motives move you? Visualize how you would feel if these kinds of messages were thrown at your sister or younger brother. " Rayden

“We can all express ourselves, but we also have to know how to do it or try to do it in the best possible way. If we don't like something or someone, we can use that time on other things. If there is something in the online world, it is variety. " Ramia's Channel

Sisterhood, the most fashionable topic

All of them agree that it is important to spread the concept of sisterhood, explain well what it is and always promote the union between women. Mad4Yu explains that it is essential to create positive influences through good examples and beautiful stories. The union between women is essential. The Fundéu defines the term sisterhood as valid to refer, in the feminist movement, to the relationship of solidarity between women.

What can we do to educate young people against hate speech?

Educators from the Somos Más initiative recommend a series of guidelines to address these behaviors.

  • Sensitization. Through showing examples that occur in the networks about the damage caused by hate speech.
  • Accountability. You have to report any situation of the style and know the correct channels.
  • Spaces to do it. That is why it is important to provide young people with the appropriate channels to report these behaviors as well as for teachers to create protocols for action.
  • Self esteem. It is essential to work on the self-esteem of young people. If they value themselves, it is easier for them to do a process of self-reflection and reject the harmful messages that come to them.
  • Conflict resolution and assertiveness. It is important that we teach young people to answer assertively before hateful messages and to resolve the conflicts that have generated them.
  • Self-criticism. Some self-insecure people tend to avoid reflecting on their behaviors and thoughts to avoid feeling bad. If we are able to reflect on ourselves, when we are victims of hate speech, we will identify it as harmful and reject it.
