Surely you have heard of contouring because in recent years it has been positioned as the favorite makeup technique of the famous. But … do you know what it is? And more importantly: do you know how you can do it at home? In this article we explain EVERYTHING you need to know to get a sculpted face in record time. Seriously, makeup like a celebrity has never been easier.

To get the best out of your features, you have to learn to do the perfect contouring . What until not long ago was the exclusive heritage of professional makeup artists, has now come to stay in our dressing tables. We tell you everything you need to know!

What is contouring?

In order to talk about this makeup technique, you first have to talk about … Kim Kardashian! Yes, you read that right. In fact, this beauty technique began to be widely applied among makeup artists in the 60s, but the celebrity has given it the name that we know today. And things as they are: Kanye West's wife is the queen of contouring.

This technique allows you to sculpt facial features using only makeup. How? Contouring plays with the shadows and points of light on our face to define it. That is, we look for which areas to highlight and which to hide to favor our face. In general, dark tones deepen and deepen features, while light tones emphasize and "project out".

How can you do it at home?

To begin with, it is essential to prepare the skin so that it looks healthy and luminous. Go for a good moisturizer and choose the makeup base that best suits your skin tone. Actually, to achieve the desired effect, you only need three products: bronzing powder, blush and highlighter.

According to makeup artists, there is one trick that always works: start lighting up before darkening. That way you won't go overboard with the effect. Of course, always apply the highlighter starting from a homogeneous face –after the foundation and the concealer–, on the cheekbones, the brow bone and in the center of the upper lip. If you want to refine the nose, extend the highlighter in the front towards the forehead. The highlighter is always applied with a slightly compact brush with an elongated and rounded shape at the end or with the fingers with light upward strokes.

If you have any questions, in this video Patry Jordan explains how to contour and illuminate the face.

The next step? Take a large brush and apply the dark shade (you will need some sun powder) just below the cheekbones (towards the ear area), at the top of the forehead (just where the hair begins), around the edge of the jaw and temple. Use a finer brush to highlight the sides of the nose.

To finish sculpting the face, it is necessary to apply the blush in the right place. If you don't know what it is, smile slightly and run the brush over the most prominent part of the cheekbone. A trick? If you go too far with the amount, apply clear loose powder with a clean brush.

The final step (and the most important!): Blend the products with the brush, so that they melt and have a super natural finish. If you want the makeup to last longer, apply a translucent powder to set the look.

eye! For your makeup to look perfect, your technique must appear natural. Therefore, it is very important to blend very well with the brushes so as not to leave any marks. Choose a beveled brush, it is ideal for blending products!
