The first thing you should do to gain space in the closet is to study the clothes and accessories you have and how much surface you have.
Custom shelves

Don't forget about the heights either. In the upper part, leave the clothes from another season, the bed clothes or those clothes that you use less. And on the wardrobe you can add a loft or arrange boxes to increase the storage capacity.
Better hang than fold
Better hang than fold
It is proven that hanging clothes take up less than folded clothes and, in addition, they do not wrinkle. So whenever you can, hang it up.
Add more bars
Add more bars
If you have a tall closet and lots of clothes to hang up, you can place more than one bar at different heights and with different lengths of clothes.
Play with the hangers

The multiples are very versatile, and the thinner ones allow you to put a greater number of hangers. However, you have some wider ones for garments that can be deformed.
No to big stacks
No to big stacks
Clothes that cannot be hung do not overfold or stack them too much, as it will be more difficult to access and keep them neat.
In three folds and vertically
In three folds and vertically
The ideal is not to fold it more than three times, as recommended by Marie Kondo, and to arrange it vertically and on its side instead of stacked, one of her tricks to keep the closet tidy without dying in the attempt.
Items with extra storage
Items with extra storage
You can also store clothes out of the closet. Use boxes under the bed or a folding couch, for example, to store seasonal or bedding. Or a trunk or pouf with storage space at the foot of the bed to take off your shoes or leave things you want to have on the bed.
Take advantage of suitcases

Another very useful element are the suitcases that you do not use. You can store clothes in them and put them on top of the closet or under the bed.

Having an additional piece of furniture of this type makes you gain storage space and helps you better maintain order. You can reserve these pieces for underwear, accessories or bed linen, for example.
Make a closet change
Make a closet change
And remember that one of the most effective tricks to save space is to put away your seasonal clothes when the weather changes. If you want to do it successfully (and without any stress), we will tell you all the secrets of how to make a wardrobe change.
How to organize the clothes closet?
Take advantage of every available millimeter and make it look bigger.
- Adjust the shelves. Adapt its height to that of the laundry piles (ideally, they should not exceed 30 cm) so as not to waste space. Consider installing extra shelves.
- Empty bars. If you have few clothes to hang and a lot that are better to fold, hang cloth shelves from the bars to store them.
- Look at the ground. Gather all the long clothes on one side of the bar and the shorter clothes on the other. Under the latter you can place a shoe rack, a small chest of drawers, some boxes …
- Visual effects. To give your closet a more spacious look, paint or line the interior with a light color or with a glow paper. Another option is to place lights under the shelves; there are self-adhesive.
The key to saving space: saving in unusual places
The doors, sides and top of the cabinet offer you endless storage possibilities.
- Take advantage of the inside of the doors. Hang special door hangers or simply hooks. You can use them to hang scarves, necklaces, belts …
- On the outer sides. Similarly, you can attach hooks or bars and hang larger accessories, such as hats or bags, from them.
- It reaches the ceiling. Above the closet you can place boxes of the same range to store things that you do not use much.
If you can, hang it up
Hanging your clothes will make you have more space and make it easier for you to access them.
- A lot of advantages. The hanging clothes take up less than folded and they do not wrinkle as much. Also, bars are cheaper than shelves or drawers.
- What if you put two bars? If you have a tall closet (about 240 cm high) and a lot of clothes to hang, one option is to put a double bar. If you get to the top one well, don't use a drop bar, because it steals interior space.
- Choose your hangers well. The thinner, the more they will fit. Multiple hangers are also helpful.
Fold clothes well
If you have no choice but to store it folded, take note of these tricks inspired by Marie Kondo's method of organizing the closet.
- Don't bend it too much. Especially if it is thick garments. Otherwise, it will cost you more to stack them and it will also be more difficult to keep them in order. It is advisable not to exceed three folds per garment.
- Store them aside. To get more out of the drawers, fold each garment into a rectangle, fold it in 3 and store the garments not one on top of the other, but vertically and sideways, one next to the other.
Create extra storage space
Don't limit yourself to the closet, especially if you have a small closet. Opt for furniture and items with extra storage space.
- Under the bed. There are many models with storage space either as a sofa or with drawers under the bed base. If this is not the case with your bed, you can put boxes under it; they better have wheels for easy handling.
- Little used suitcases. Take advantage of them to store clothes from other seasons. You can also store them under the bed.
- At the foot of the bed. Place a trunk. It will be used to take off your shoes and to store things.
- Free walls. Instead of shelves and hooks for hanging, put a dresser, which favors order.
Clara trick
