After almost a month of confinement, our wicks are not the same. More than one of them had to go to the hairdresser to retouch the color these days –yes, I was one of those–, but surely, with Easter so close,  the thinking of the majority was the same: “I wait for Holy Week ” . And, of course, the holidays as they arrived are gone and our highlights are still hopeless. Is there a solution at this point? Yes of course. Can the highlights be tinted at home in an easy way? They can and two experts tell us how to do it.

Matting highlights at home , as you imagined, is risky. Do we check chemistry? Have we ever been taught to do it and do we have experience? The answer to both questions is the same: "no." So daring to qualify without any knowledge is a bit "kamikaze".

There is the possibility of doing it, in fact  in the market there are products to achieve it, as Olga G. San Bartolomé  told us on her  blog,  but it is not easy or recommended by the experts. As she herself has written: "shoemaker to your shoes".

“To keep the highlights well at home, I recommend now, in these circumstances, and always, to  use a shampoo for highlights and products formulated to especially protect colored hair , but if you don't have it at home, it is advisable to use a sulfate-free shampoo , as gentle as possible - you could use the baby's if you have it. In addition, you have to hydrate it a lot, and take care of it with masks, oils, serums … Another basic of any colored hair and also with highlights is the  use of shampoos, masks or conditioners with pigments ",  tells us Eduardo Sánchez, the owner of Maison Eduardo Sánchez .

An opinion that is also shared by Amado Quílez, hairdresser and make-up artist of the exclusive Alma Sensai Club: "The only trick to tint the highlights at home, if it is yellow,  is the purple shampoo or the purple mask . "

"The lilac shampoo  will help us to neutralize the yellow tones or whiten the natural gray hair  when they have taken on a yellowish tone, while the blue color shampoo  is the only one that can eliminate the orange tone  after a discoloration", said Olga G . San Bartolome.

Come on, what if we jump in the pool and experiment?

"Experimenting is the biggest mistake we can make because you are not a hairdresser , you do not control chemicals and timing … You run the risk of spoiling the professional's work and that the recovery of the initial color, once we return to the hairdresser, is not the desired one . It happens to hairdressers like doctors, then they always lie to us… ”they joke from Club Alma. Putting ourselves in the worst case scenario, two things could happen to us : we burn our hair and in the end we have to cut more than we want or end up with reddish or green hair. Very good doesn't sound, does it?

And what do I do with the roots?

When we space out visits to the hairdresser so much, the problem is not only that the color of our highlights is no longer so beautiful, it is also that the root is there doing its own thing! And, of course, the natural color that we each have in the end ends up being discovered. Both Eduardo Sánchez and Amado Quílez agree that the most practical is to retouch the roots in the case that we are wearing babylights , balayage or Californian highlights . “If we talk about covering the roots, you can take risks, but doing highlights at home I do not recommend it under any circumstances. In addition, now it is necessary to have a dark root so that the rest of the blonde in the hair stands out more , so nothing happens ”, advises Eduardo Sánchez.

If you have any doubts, call your hairdresser. "Before dyeing the root, if you dare, I advise you to call your trusted hairdresser and ask for the color number so that it is the closest when you buy it, via the internet, at the supermarket or pharmacy. ”, Says Amado Quílez.

Shine yeah, to infinity and beyond

Something we must do if we have highlights, and more at this time of year, is to hydrate them to get extra shine. "Something that I recommend to my clients is to put on the mask dry", they add from Club Alma Sensai. And Amado has told us step by step how to do it.

  • Put a couple of tablespoons of mask or serum and a few drops of oil in a bowl and heat it in the microwave for a couple of seconds.
  • Make a ponytail, wet it, and apply the mixture only to the ponytail - it's an easy way not to touch the roots.
  • Leave it for a few hours, if you can, and even one night. And if you want an extra dose of effect, cover it with a shower cap or plastic wrap.
  • Rinse the mask off and wash normally.

“There is a classic homemade trick which is to use vinegar to enhance shine. A little amount of white vinegar is diluted in water and is poured on the hair after washing ”, they recall from Maison Eduardo Sánchez.
