How to choose a perfume right

The vast majority of us have our favorite fragrance or scents, although sometimes we like to experiment. To help you choose well when it comes to a new perfume (both for gifts and for you), we have spoken with the best master perfumers and these are the tips they have given us:

1. Go alone to

The choice of perfume is personal, because it is you who are going to use it. If you are accompanied by a friend, her tastes can influence your final decision. Nor should you be pressured by the opinion of the saleswoman. You will know that you are on the right track if smelling it causes you an immediate feeling of well-being.

2. Choose the right moment

The ideal time to choose a fragrance is when you are happy, when you feel good. Studies show that the adrenaline you release at that moment refines your sense of smell, making it easier for you to make the right choice. On the contrary, stay away from the perfumery if you have a bad time. Sad people have anhedonia (or inability to experience pleasure) at the olfactory level. If you choose a time when you are low to choose a new perfume, its aroma will leave you indifferent and, therefore, you will not know which one to decide on.

3. Avoid trying them all

At most you can try 3 perfumes at the same time, because from there the smell is already saturated. You can explain your preferences to the clerk so that she can make a preliminary selection for you. To be more on the safe side, if you like spicy, fruity or floral, bet on the same olfactory family.

4. Question of personality

The preferences of women when choosing a perfume have a lot to do with their character. The vitalists tend to bet on fresh notes of citrus, fresh fruits and flowers. Passionate women love intense florals and warm aromas (musk, amber). And the most sophisticated tend to lean towards oriental notes (patchouli, vanilla, sandalwood).

5. Beware of referents

Do you want to identify the perfume with you by smelling it or do you want it because you identify with the model, actress or singer who advertises it? The master perfumers assure that we should only let ourselves be carried away by the emotions caused by the aroma.

6. Smell the perfume on your skin

Do not smell the perfume directly from the bottle, because you will only perceive the alcohol and the top notes. Try it on the strips of paper that are usually found in perfume shops (to discard the one you don't like) and, later, on your wrist. Remember that the same fragrance can smell different on each person, because it reacts differently on the skin.

7. Don't rub your wrists

Vaporize the perfume 4 or 5 centimeters from the skin and let the alcohol evaporate, without rubbing one wrist against the other. This gesture modifies its structure and, therefore, its real aroma.

8. Take the time

Wait for the perfume to settle on the skin to assess the middle notes (they appear after several minutes) and the base notes, which are those that remain for hours. If you doubt between several, try one on the wrist and another on the inside of the other arm; and watch how they evolve throughout the day.

9. Is it to be used daily or on special occasions?

A very intense perfume is best worn at night or at celebrations. If it is going to be used daily, then it is better to resort to less concentrated fragrances, such as eau de toilette, which are fresher and lighter.

10. Leave a mark for hours

It is what the consumer demands the most, that the perfume last on the skin for hours, although it must be taken into account that the smell itself accommodates itself immediately. That is why it is advisable to change the fragrance from time to time. A curiosity: the aroma lasts longer on oily skin than on dry skin, so be careful with the amount you use.
