What is hyaluronic acid and what is it for?

It is normal for hearing or reading "acid" to throw us back, but hyaluronic acid not only will not burn or irritate your skin, but it will hydrate it and give it a healthier and more youthful appearance.

What is hyaluronic acid?

It is a component naturally present in our own skin, cartilage and joints. If we focus on the skin, the main characteristic of this molecule is its ability to attract and capture water (up to 1000 times its weight!), Acting like a sponge. This makes it fill in expression lines and the skin looks plump and juicy.

The problem is that, like collagen, it decreases as we get older, being largely responsible for the aging process. To give you an idea, its degradation process is daily and, in fact, every three days all the hyaluronic acid we have is totally new.

What is hyaluronic acid for?

The incorporation of this acid to our skin stimulates our own hyaluronic acid and the synthesis of collagen. It fills it in and gives it volume, which helps reduce wrinkles. It is a fundamental anti-aging ingredient and, although it is more effective when injected (infiltrations in aesthetic medical treatments), its effect can also be appreciated when applied through serums and creams. By acting as a moisturizing and supportive agent on the skin, it helps it stay young. Young skin is, above all, well-hydrated skin.

How do hyaluronic acid injections work?

Hyaluronic acid injections create a mesh that favors the proper functioning of the tissues. It is considered a filler material that smoothes the skin , attracts water molecules to promote hydration and fills in the areas where it is injected (lips, dark circles, cheekbones, wrinkles …).

  • The hyaluronic acid filler is resorbable. The effects usually last about 6 months and, being an ingredient that is found naturally in our skin, it is biocompatible and does not cause allergies. All this makes hyaluronic acid one of the most demanded fillers for the safety it offers.
  • They are of different molecular weight and quality . For example, one that provides more flexibility will be more recommended for the lips. Therefore, as there are so many types, brands and formulas, it is best to seek the advice of an experienced aesthetic doctor . The same hyaluronic acid will not be used to gently contour areas of the face - and give it a little more volume and juiciness - than to fill in deep wrinkles or especially thin hands.

Where is hyaluronic acid applied?

Many people associate it only to fill cheekbones or lips, but hyaluronic acid can be applied to the entire upper third face (frown, crow's feet, eyebrow lift, dark circles), as well as to the lower third (nasolabial fold, code of bars or chin).

It is also used a lot on the neck, décolleté, hands and, lately, it is in high demand to rejuvenate the intimate area. With the passage of time, women lose their natural lubrication and the volume of the labia majora is reduced, which can cause discomfort in day-to-day life and during sexual intercourse. Fillers with hyaluronic acid restore comfort to the area.

Not to be confused with botox

Although both botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid are solutions to "remove" wrinkles, they are totally different techniques.

  • Botox. It is injected only in the upper part of the face and paralyzes the muscle so that the wrinkle does not occur. If you are thinking of getting a touch up, take a look at what NOT to do.
  • Hyaluronic acid. It is injected mainly in the lower part (although it can also be used in the upper part) to fill the crease of the wrinkle giving a smoother appearance.

Also in hair treatments

Hylauronic acid is also used as an anti-aging ingredient for hair. Regenerates and plumps the cuticle, giving it softness, hydration and shine. Depending on the length of the hair, the salon treatments are long. They can last between 2 and 3 hours, but they leave hair smooth, hydrated and frizz-free for several weeks.
