A study published in the journal Cell has revealed the existence of a drug that could prevent metastasis. The research has been developed by a team from the University and the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland. This is great news because metastasis is responsible for 90% of cancer deaths.

Metastasis occurs when cancer cells spread to other organs. The new drug precisely what it does is that these malignant cells do not spread.

The research leader, Nicola Aceto from the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel, explained what has been the key to finding this drug: cancer cells, but simply dissociate them. We are already working on the next step, which is to carry out a clinical trial with patients with breast cancer ”.

It is a medical advance that sows hope on the stage of the fight against cancer. According to data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics), cancer was the second cause of death in Spain in 2017. Breast, bronchial and lung, colon and pancreas cancers are the most common in the case of women.
