Do I do the keratin treatment or the dye before?

This is one of the most common questions my clients ask when they come to the salon for a keratin treatment or straightening. Do I do the dye and then the keratin? Or first the keratin and then I dye it? The truth is that it will depend on the type of keratin we choose.

This is one of the most common questions my clients ask when they come to the salon for a keratin treatment or straightening. Do I do the dye and then the keratin? Or first the keratin and then I dye it? The truth is that it will depend on the type of keratin we choose.

First of all … how does keratin work?

The cortex of the hair is emptied due to the aggressions of hair dyes, dryers and irons. Being damaged, frizzy and wavy, it creates many gaps in the internal structure of the hair. The goal of the keratin treatment is to smooth the hair fiber, rebuild the hair and restore the hydration and shine it has lost. To do this, the inside of the hair fiber is filled with new protein.

Does keratin lighten the color?

The answer is yes, but some clarify more than others. If we want to lighten ½ tone , we can do the color before, we can even do both on the same day. Of course, arm yourself with patience because you will spend about three hours in the living room. The advantage is that in one day you have everything ready.

If the keratin is organic, it usually lightens the hair a couple of tones, so we will leave the color for after straightening and we will never do it the same day as the keratin. We will wait two weeks.

So when do I get the keratin treatment?

You must wait at least four weeks if you have highlighted or bleached your hair. And one week if you have dyed it or have had a color bath.

Advantages of doing the keratin before the color

  • By having the internal fiber recovered, the color will last longer.
  • The keratin itself protects you from the aggressions of coloring.
  • It can be a good option if you are thinking of lightening your hair a bit, many of my clients do!

Disadvantages of doing the keratin before the color

  • The main drawback is that you remove part of the keratin when you dye your hair, especially if you use the color to the ends.
  • Another disadvantage that you will find if you are going to do highlights after straightening is that being so protected by keratin it may cost much more to lighten the highlights. If you do not do everything in the same salon, my advice is that you notify the hairdresser of the treatment that you have had.

Tricks to make the keratin and color last longer

  1. After two months, apply a hair botox treatment to increase the durability of the keratin for another month.
  2. Always wash your hair with shampoos without salts, sulfates or parabens. You will increase the duration of the keratin and keep the color more vivid.
  3. One surefire trick is to wash with a non-detergent, conditioning shampoo . Soap is basically what drags the most, both the keratin and the color.
  4. Always apply a color conditioner, as it will help you maintain the color longer and will help keep the cuticle sealed, so that less internal protein will be lost.
  5. Activating the keratin with the heat of the dryer helps keep your hair healthier, but remember that it should be an ionic dryer.

Bet on organic keratin

The MAG Keratin Active Kit is a revolutionary compound made up of collagen, keratin and amino acids, specially treated to penetrate the cortex of the hair and give it strength, shine and a perfect straightening.

The natural composition of hair is anionic (negative). By using this shampoo we get a higher anionic load, so we get a better grip on the hair bonds and. therefore. more durability (between 4 and 6 months).

The hair cuticle is a semi-permeable layer in which only microparticles, such as those from MAG's Keratin Active treatment, manage to enter the interior of the cortex. The positively charged particles of this keratin are attracted like magnets by the proteins of the cortex, forming a protein complex. In just 30 minutes its assets are absorbed by the hair fiber.

Before ironing (heat sealing), the hair is rinsed to remove excess product that has not been absorbed by the cortex. In this way, we will only work with the product that is inside the hair, a much safer way to respect the hair. With the heat of the iron we manage to bind the disulfide bonds with the proteins, filling the hair and closing the cuticle, thus obtaining a perfect straightening, with a lot of shine for the hair.

What's the score?

We increase the volume of each hair, giving it more structure and thickness, leaving it much more manageable and sealing the cuticles. We achieve, without chemical straighteners, a totally natural straightening.
