If you are one of those who pulls saccharin to sweeten coffee thinking that it is healthier than sugar, we are sorry to tell you… no. It is true that stevia, saccharin, cyclamate, sucralose or aspartame are sweeteners that do not add calories to coffee, but it does not mean that they are the healthiest option.

There are studies that suggest that some of these non-caloric sweeteners could alter the intestinal flora. These sweeteners would release molecules that can modify the microbiota and this can contribute to maintaining a low-grade chronic inflammatory process that promotes weight gain, among other problems.

Hooked on coffee

Ideally, we should get used to eating foods without sugar, including coffee. When we add sweetener to coffee we accustom our palate to sweetness and that can stimulate us to consume another drink or sweet food. In fact, it appears that artificial sweeteners are more dependent on flavor and more appetite than a natural sweetener, such as sugar or honey.

Dr. Dolores del Olmo García, from the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN), explains that "ingesting more sugar than recommended continuously, could lead to the appearance of serious health problems, such as overweight, obesity, diabetes … ".

But the coffee is only very strong …

Good news! There is a natural sweetener full of properties that will make your coffee much smoother than if you drink it alone. The cinnamon.

Taking cinnamon "warms up" the body and helps improve digestion. In addition, in a study carried out by the University of Maryland (USA) it was observed that consuming ¼ tablespoon of cinnamon a day mixed with food increases metabolism up to 20 times.

If you are a coffee maker, you know, add half a tablespoon of cinnamon to your coffee and remember not to exceed 2 or 3 cups a day to enjoy all its benefits.
