To begin with, I am a strong defender of rugs. In addition to giving warmth to the home, they are very effective to heat the house using as little heating as possible, and they are infallible to renovate the house and make it look different without works. But it is also true that the fact that if I don't clean them they often turn into a nest of dust and germs , I put very few of them back.

However, since I bought one of the self- vacuuming robots and discovered the trick to cleaning carpets easily without the need for a vacuum cleaner! (I'll tell you about it below), I'm reconciling with them, and I'm already thinking of wearing some more.

How to clean carpets

1. Remove dirt

As a general rule, it is recommended to vacuum at least once a week, and clean them thoroughly at least once a year. And to make the task easier, you can use a robot vacuum cleaner –such as the Roomba, the most famous, or the Conga, just as effective and much cheaper–, since they vacuum alone (and thus it is less lazy to clean them).

  • What if you don't have a vacuum cleaner? The broom is not highly recommended because it does not just take all the dirt. But there is a solution: use a glass cleaning brush like the ones used for windows or the shower screen. You just have to move it from one end to the other by pressing hard and you will see how you drag all the dirt. Besides being an infallible trick to clean carpets without a vacuum cleaner, it is very effective when you have pets at home.

2. Wash and disinfect them

As most rugs cannot get wet because the fabrics can be damaged by liquids, it is usually recommended to dry clean them at the dry cleaner, but the truth is that it is a process that can be quite expensive, in addition to the roll that involves taking it out and having it what to take there.

  • Is it possible to do a home dry cleaning? Yes, it is possible and, in addition, you will save time, money and avoid toxic cleaning products. You just have to sprinkle sodium bicarbonate on top, leave it on for at least an hour and then remove it with a vacuum cleaner. Bicarbonate, one of the most effective household cleaning products, disinfects and neutralizes bad odors.

Specific treatments according to the carpet material

  • Wool rugs. Shake it off, vacuum, clean with a cloth soaked in water and mild soap and dry quickly with a hair dryer.
  • Cotton rugs. Vacuum both sides and, for a thorough cleaning, rub with white vinegar diluted in warm water and let it dry. Discover more uses of vinegar to clean.
  • Synthetic fiber rugs. Vacuum and clean with dry foam.
  • Natural fiber rugs. The sisal and jute can be cleaned with a cloth dampened in salt water, and let it dry without direct sun.
  • Bamboo rugs. Vacuum without shaking, clean with a cloth dampened with water and mild soap, and let it dry.

And if you want to know how to remove furniture marks and localized stains from carpets, this is it.
