If you are looking for a fruit compote without sugar to make at home and that is really easy to make, you have found the right place. As a general rule, fruit compote is made by cooking whole or chopped fruit in water with a little sugar.

As it contains much less sugar than jam, it is lighter than this. However, to make it a truly 100% guilt-free dessert when you want to keep the weight off, you can make it with absolutely no sugar. How? I cook the fruit over low heat for a long time so that the fruit concentrates its natural sugars without the need to add more.

Ingredients for making fruit compote without sugar

  • 4 pieces of the same seasonal fruit or several (apple, pear, peach, plums …) to be able to be ripe so that they are sweeter.
  • Water.
  • 1 cinnamon stick

How to make fruit compote without sugar

  1. Wash, peel and chop the fruit into more or less small pieces depending on the finish you want.
  2. Place it in a saucepan along with the cinnamon stick and add water just until it is covered but without overdoing it.
  3. Cook over low heat until the water has reduced and the fruit is soft. If you see that it is dry and it is not done yet, you can gradually add a little more hot water so as not to stop cooking. Cooking time will vary depending on the type and consistency of the fruit. And you will know that it is ready when the fruit is tender.
  4. Once the fruit is compiled, remove the saucepan from the heat, let it warm up a bit and remove the cinnamon stick.
  5. If it is too runny, you can pass it through a strainer and serve it whole. Or you can mash it with a fork and serve it as is, as a puree.
  • If you want to give it more flavor, you can add lemon peel, vanilla essence, fresh mint leaves …

The fruit compote without sugar will last you a week in the fridge (if you make it canned, it can last for months). It is great to take advantage of fruit that you already have very ripe or that you find at a good price when you are in "Safe food" mode. It is ideal for breakfasts and snacks, as we often put in our healthy weekly menu for the whole family. And it is also a great fit to decorate or accompany desserts, or even as a garnish for meat and fish dishes.
